I went to a dentist to get a cavity filled... towards the back of my mouth. The dentist had a device in my mouth to help hold it open... oh SO comfortable *eyes rolling*. They always talk to you when you can't talk back yet expect you to. It happens to me every time. It's almost like you have to learn sign language just to get your teeth cleaned these days.

As for her job being easier, that's ridiculous. That would be like me saying my job as an attorney would be easier if people just quit committing crimes or slipping & falling in grocery stores. Her job exists because people don't floss. What would she do otherwise?

I'm sorry for your bad experience, but I can so relate. Maybe our dentists went to dental school together. If not, they're soul mates. I'm not going back to my condescending one either. Be rude to me once, shame on you. Be rude to me twice, shame on me. The appointment in April will be canceled, and I'll be going back to my old one, even if I have to pay 3 times as much.

I just came back from the dentist today, and i am So MAD. Some people have nice dentists, but my dentist is not one of them. AT ALL.

I seriously felt like leaving halfway through. Although i brush my teeth regularly i almost never floss. My Dentist would NOT STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. She asked me to look in the mirror twenty times throughout the appointment (i counted), to see what plaque is. Every time i started to bleed from my gums, she asked me to look in the mirror as well. Then she talked for roughly forty minutes (throughout the whole appointment she would ask me awkward and rude questions while she was working on my teeth, i had no way of answering back) how her life would be so much easier (people like me made her job so terrible) if people would floss. And she kept on making heavy handed snide remarks throughout the WHOLE appointment, asking me if i was being sarcastic when i asked questions about flossing, that i thought my teeth were perfect (i don't think my teeth are perfect) but that in the future i would get gum disease, if i had plans to have a girlfriend they would be ruined (Girls don't like plaque apparently), that her job would be much better if i found another dentist and that i should consider being a dentist so i could look at plaque all day. She was rude and demeaning more times than i could remember.

Dentists take note: There are ways of talking to your patient, being a condescending and complete Bitch is not one of them. If you don't like your job and feel its REALLY necessary to LECTURE your patients while making remarks about how you think they have no hygiene (instead of, lets say, i don't know... Maybe informing them politely??) get ANOTHER JOB. Its your job to clean people's teeth, no matter if the teeth have plaque, are falling apart or whatever, thats your job, if you don't like that fact, then quit!!

I almost feel like getting cavities, just to spite her. She was very unprofessional and very judgmental. I'm definitely NOT going to see her again. Considering that i received this cold condescending treatment from her when i have never had cavities and my teeth are perfectly intact, i wonder what it must be like for her patients that do have cavities. Maybe she yells at them.

Yay, someone who understands the genetic side!

I went back to the old dentist today, and, lo and behold, he found the spot, thanks mainly to my sketch. Since it didn't hurt when he used the poker thing (can't think of what they're called right now) but did hurt when he put pressure on it with his finger, he said it was basically like a bruise on my tooth. The bottom tooth was constantly hitting it, reinjuring the area and never allowing it to heal. He filed that area, so it was more curved and not hitting the other tooth, and, voila, the pain is mostly gone. Technically, the "bruise" still has to heal, but it's so much better than yesterday.

I kept apologizing the whole time for not going there the first time around. I felt so bad, but at the same time having someone believe you (and not have 2 flat screens per room) made me feel better.

I don't have flat screens in my house either. Heck if I want to pay for someone else's before I even have one myself.

re: My gums have been receding pretty much my entire life. It's genetic. My mom's teeth and gums looked exactly like mine. Same size, same color, same amount of recession, same everything. My dad's gums, meanwhile, were so bad that he had to have all his teeth pulled and replaced with false ones. In other words, my mouth is subject to a DNA double whammy.

WOW that statement could have been written by my daughter. We too have: It's genetic. Her teeth and gums looked exactly like mine. Same size, same color, same amount of recession, same everything. And her grandpa, MY dad, lost all teeth at 15 due to disolving teeth, not rot. Now our teeth are slowly disolving but most dentists think it's rot and should be hurting. It doesn't! We get holes in teeth below gumline and IF it reaches a nerve then it can get an infection and then it can hurt, but mostly it just disolves.

So we BOTH feel your pain and have come to not trust our new dentist that needs to pay for his fancy new office with flat screen TV's that we don't even have in our home :( But our old dentist that is in another state (we moved) used to be like yours, kind and understanding with our plight and did his best to keep the teeth we have the longest we could.

Thanks for post. I'm glad to hear others are having the same problem as we where feeling alone on this problem. But I am sorry for your pain.

Do they not have to take some kind of hypocratic oath or at least adhere to ethical standards? Making someone hurt for six months just so the hole can get bigger and you can charge them more for a crown would seem to me to be an ethics violation of some sort. It would be like me letting a client commit more crimes for six months so I can justify charging him more down the road.

Well, it is harder for dentists to make a living these days as people are taking better routine care of their oral areas. Just means when they get a live one they have to make sure to spread your visits out as much as possible and charge a whole lot for anything theyr do. It's simple economics.

What's funny or ironic anyway is that I rarely have a cavity when I go. Except for the one I'm arguing about now, I don't even think I have had a filling in around five or six years. The hygienist even said that there was hardly anything for her to scrape off my teeth, and I would say that says a lot when you haven't had a professional cleaning in two years. So you would think that means I'm doing something right flossing and brushing wise, but no. Since I have receding gums and possible bone loss (according to hygienist; dentist never even said anything about bone loss), all of a sudden I'm one of those people who scrub their teeth harder than they scrub their tubs but who barely touch their teeth with floss. One concept (no cavities in their mind, little plaque) seems to contradict the other (bad brusher & flosser). They need to pick a side and go with it.

Thanks for the GL. My second opinion appt is Thursday. I'd rather pay the money and have the piece of mind of knowing what a second dentist says than not and hurt for the next six months. Maybe my drawing will help this time. I'm going to take my lighted dentist mirror, too. I'm not too proud to pull that baby out of my pocket.

Up until now, I never minded going to the dentist. Heck, I kind of liked it because my old dentist--the one I'm going to Thursday--would always tell me that, despite my gumline, I was doing everything right and to keep up the good work. That always made me feel good. Plus, I always liked getting a new toothbrush for free. I'm a dork that way.

The dentist is quickly becoming a place I hate to go to too. I'm tired of being told that I will have to go see a periodontist "at some point" every single time I visit. Can't he just wait until "that point" has arrived and then tell me to go to the periodontist. And the lessons in flossing...OY! I think I've had that lesson every six months since I was 10. I thought about it and made an appointment with my old dentist for a second opinion. I should have just gone there to begin with and paid full price. I also sketched out a picture of the tooth and where the spot was located in case this one thinks I'm loony too.
