New Directions for Using CommentLuv and JS-Kit (Now Echo)

Many of you may have noticed that my comment system looks different yet again. It is because JS-Kit upgraded to Echo last week. You can still use CommentLuv with Echo. You may just have to be a little more crafty in getting it to work.

The first way is by logging in using one of the available ID's under Echo (Open ID, Blogger, JS-Kit, etc.). Once you log in, you'll get a screen that looks like this:

Do you see under my name where it says "Add Another Site"? You need to click on that, even if you have previously registered you blog with JS-Kit, Open ID, etc. Then add your blog's URL to the line that says "My Site". If you click on the words "My Site," it will give you a line. You can actually add several URL's, but only the last URL on the list will be picked up by CommentLuv. Once you add it, you shouldn't have to add it again in the future, so long as you are logged in. I haven't so far.

Playing around with it a few minutes ago after a commenter experienced a problem with his feed, I found out a couple of other things. First, after you enter your blog's url on "My Sites," click somewhere else on the comment form so it doesn't delete it. I think the X next to it deletes it. Second, if you still see the "Sorry, but there was a problem with your feed" error, deselect/uncheck the error message. Wait a couple of seconds, and then recheck it. When I did that, the error disappeared and my feed showed up. Third, if Guest still shows up instead of your name, just click on the Guest line. (I'm not signed in on the form below, but the directions are still the same as far as Guest goes.)

When you do, Guest should end up highlighted in blue like in the picture. You can then type your name in the field.

You don't have to keep it Guest. This little tidbit applies for everyone, even those not logged into JS-Kit, Blogger, etc.

The other option is to use the form without logging in. You should get a form that looks like this when you do:

All you have to do on this form is put your URL in the URL field and your name where it says "Guest," and CommentLuv should pick up your feed. You won't get a pretty picture in that case. Echo apparently doesn't work with Gravatar, but you will get a link to your latest post. Again, you can change Guest to say your name, your blog's name, or whatever you want it to say other than Guest.

Some people may get a comment form that looks like this one and is missing the URL field:

If you do get such a screen, hit reload, and you should get one with a URL field. If you don't, try cleaning out your cache and cookies. That should take care of the problem.

One more thing that is different on Echo is the email field. It's not there anymore. To receive an email notice that your comment has been replied to, click on "Follow" at the bottom of the comment form. It will give you a choice of how you want to receive the replies, either via email or by RSS subscription. If you want it by email, select that option and enter your email address. Your email will remain private. I don't even get to see it. It stays with JS-Kit. All I can see is your IP address.

If you have any problems getting CommentLuv or Echo to work, let me know, and I'll see if I can fix it.
