I Need a New Check Design

As I was writing my check for the water bill Monday--one of the few bills that I can't pay online--I realized that I only have two checks left in that book. I know that I have one more book left upstairs in my desk drawer, but I think that's it. Luckily, thanks to one of my favorite inventions called Bill Pay, I don't have to reorder checks as often as I did in the 90's. Nevertheless, personal checks are still a necessity.

In case you couldn't tell it from my blog design, I like color, lots and lots of color. If I can help it, I'll never have boring white walls in my house or a boring white background on my web site ever again. It's no surprise then that my desire for all things colorful also extends to my checks. I may not use them often, but when I do use them, I want them to say "me" in more places than the signature line. That's why I never go with those plain blue or beige designs that my bank keeps in stock. I usually find some bright, funky design online instead.

The thing is after I go through four books of checks, which can often take me a year or more, even bright and funky becomes boring so I'm always looking for a new design to try. At VistaPrint.com, I can actually customize the design that I select by changing the font and accent image. Like here I used the Big Limbo font and a whimsical heart:

Whereas here I used the Aetna JY Newstyle font and a daisy:

If I had to choose, I would go with the Big Limbo font because it's not one you see every day on checks. Usually, all you see is Arial or Times New Roman. Big Limbo is different, and different can be good. The accent image costs extra, but it's only 99 cents extra, which isn't a bad deal. Without the accent image, the checks run for $4.99 for a 25 count box or $9.99 for a 150 count box, a much better buy.

I still don't know for sure which checks I want yet. As slow as I go through the boxes, I still have a few more months to decide. I just wish that every time I bought a new set, an amount of money equal to the numbers on the checks would magically appear in my checking account. I would buy checks once a week then.
