I Think Her Splint is Too Long

I'm supposed to be checking Bella's toes several times a day for swelling and for temperature on her broken foot. I thought that would be an easy thing to do, as the vet told me that her toes were peeking out of the splint. Obviously, the vet doesn't know hair from toes because they're not peeking out. They're about three inches in, past two inches of hair and another inch of toenails. I can't reach them or feel them so now I'm extremely paranoid that the bandages are too tight and by the time the vet opens in the morning her leg is going to require amputation. I know that I'm probably overreacting, but I can't help it. I can't feel the toes at all.

Because the toes are so far back, the cast is too long for Bella to even walk. She's having to drag the leg underneath her. As a result, she has torn a hole in every bag that I've put on the cast since it started raining. Luckily, I found her some rain/snow booties on clearance at Petsmart. I've been putting the bootie over the plastic bag so the splint and bandages haven't got wet, but it's only a matter of time before they do. She can't even pee without holding the leg under her, which places the splint an inch from the urine. Sooner or later she's going to pee inside, sans bag and bootie, and pee on the bandages.

I plan on taking her to the vet first thing in the morning. I'd rather come off looking like an idiot than finding out that I wasn't paranoid and her cast is, in fact, too long and too tight. If I'm right, they'd better not charge me another $100 for a shorter splint. The vet said that she was going to have them cut her toenails and clean up the area before applying the splint. It's not my fault if she forgot to tell them that so the vet techs thought the two inches of hair were toes.

If any of you have had experience with splints that were too long on your dogs or cats, could you please let me know. I'm going to be completely stressed out until morning. Thanks.
