The Dog in the Big Blue Cast

Well, Bella has done it again. Just when I thought it was safe to breathe a sigh of relief that we had made it a couple of months without something major happening to her, the dog goes and breaks her front left foot. How she did it I have no idea. All I know is that she woke up yesterday morning and couldn't put any weight on it. I spent yesterday hoping that she just stepped on it wrong, bruised it, and was milking me for all that bruise was worth. However, after a virtually sleepless night--does one or two hours even count as sleep--it was obvious that Bella's boo-boo was a lot worse than a bruise. We spent most of this morning waiting for my vet to work us in, and most of this afternoon waiting for her to apply the splint.

As you can see from the picture, the cast is almost bigger than Bella is. Why they needed to brace her leg all the way up to the top of her femur when the only thing that she broke was a bone in her foot, I'll never know. The cast is actually longer than her leg so she's having a difficult time getting around. She still hasn't peed yet so now I have to worry that she's going to get yet another UTI. I have to keep watch on her toes for swelling and temperature changes that can indicate that the bandages are too tight. I also have to put a bag on her leg if there is even the slightest bit of moisture outside because the bandages can't get wet. Wouldn't you know it then that it's supposed to rain all weekend?

I'm just waiting for her to do something really stupid like stick the cast in her water bowl or pee on it. Getting it wet in the rain is too obvious. Even worse, since I don't know how she broke it to begin with, I'm scared that she's going to do whatever it is again, only on her other foot. Then what am I supposed to do, push her around on my nephew's skateboard until it heals?

At least I have a new nickname for her--Peg Leg. I don't think she likes it any more than she likes the giant blue cast. I didn't like the giant blue bill so I guess that makes us even.
