The Day of the Boring Lawyers

I did it again. I waited until the last possible day to watch my continuing legal education seminar DVDs. I could have watched a little bit each day, but I didn't. Instead, I shoved the box with the DVDs in my bedroom armoire and forgot about it until late last night. As a result, I have had to force myself to watch hour after hour of "Criminal Law for the Non-Criminal Lawyer" today. Believe me when I say it hasn't been fun.

The seminar had the potential to be interesting. It was about white collar crime. It had topics entitled "White Collar Crime Boot Camp," "What to Do When the Feds Come Knocking," and "What to Do When You're a Victim of Fraud." The bar even hired an FBI agent to speak at the event. I thought for sure that the agent and the attorneys who prosecute the offenders (sorry, I couldn't pass up the Law & Order tie-in) would litter their speeches with colorful antidotes about criminals in suits, but they didn't. They just droned on and on and on about the technical aspects of the law.

I tried doing my Entrecard drops while watching the DVDs, but reading other people's blogs did little to ease my boredom. I also tried YouTube. While I found the new Howie Mandel video for Buy.com funny, entertaining, and slightly naughty, it didn't make the counter on the DVD player move any faster. In fact, I still have two excruciating hours left to watch.

You would think that, for all the money the seminar costs, I would at least learn something useful from it. I haven't. Instead, I've learned that lawyers are boring, that they like the sound of their own voices, and that they don't like to put a lot of inflection in their voice, but I'm pretty sure that I already knew that. I've also learned that, should the state bar ever have some end-of-the-year, clearance Sale on their DVDs, I'm not buying.
