The more that I play around with the design of this blog, the more I realize that I actually enjoy it. Despite issues with meta tags, title tags, and cross browser compatibility, I still enjoy the design aspects of it. It makes me wish that I had gone to a real art school and majored in graphic design, instead of going to a liberal arts school and minoring in studio art. I even looked online at a few online programs tonight in an effort to decide whether I should go back to school and turn my enjoyment into a career. As it turns out, the Savannah College of Art and Design has an online graphics program, as well as campuses in Savannah and Atlanta. Given the slim pickings in the legal field at the moment, not to mention the job market in general, I'm giving the idea serious thought. The way I see it people are always going to need computers, and thus they're always going to need web and graphic designers. At least, I hope they are.I have also had a few ideas about small business opportunities floating around in my head lately. They all revolve around me doing custom blog designs on the side while I look for a real job. I would start with Blogger designs, as Blogger is the only platform that I know at the moment, and then eventually teach myself other platforms like Wordpress and Typepad, thereby expanding my clientele. I don't know that anyone would buy my designs, but I figure that it's worth a shot. If nothing else, I would have fun playing around on Paint.net.
I even asked my mom for one of those touch pads and mouse pens for my birthday next week. I told her if I can draw with a pencil and a piece of charcoal, surely I can draw on a computer as well. It might take a little trial and error to get the hang of it, but I'm sure that after a few weeks, I'll be able to draw just as well as some of those artists I see on iStockphoto and Stockxpert everyday. Drawing is one of the few things that I have always done well.
Believe it or not, I have been thinking about the idea so much that I literally lay there at night thinking of the different things that I can draw if I get the mouse and pad and the blog designs that I can create around them. I wish that the design bug had bit me years ago like, say, my freshman year in college. I might be in a very different place today. I guess, even a week away from 33, it's still not too late.
