I want to apologize for any display issues this blog might have had today. I woke up this morning with the bright idea of putting one of the Twitter birds and links in my header area. Previously, I had my Twitter link on the sidebar, way down below the archive where, for most people, it was really out of sight and out of mind. I thought that I knew how to place the image where I wanted it. I thought it was as simple as going to "Add Gadgets," selecting "Picture," finding the Twitter image on my hard drive, uploading it, typing my Twitter link in the html field, and hitting "Save."It could have been that easy. When I followed those steps, the Twitter picture and link did go above the header as planned, but design-wise the placement wasn't all that pleasing, at least not to me anyway. There was too much blank space above the header, and the entire header got pushed so far down that there was hardly any text above the fold.
Around lunchtime, I got another bright idea--move the picture below the navigation bar and then play around with the bar's padding until the picture is where I want it. After an hour of so of playing the numbers game, I thought that I had it. The picture and navigation bar looked the way I wanted them to in Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome. I bet you can see where this little story is going, as I left the most obvious web browser out of that list. I forgot to check Internet Explorer.
After a late lunch, I remembered that I forgot to check the display in Internet Explorer. Sure enough, it wasn't right. It wasn't even close to right. After trying for another hour to fix the issue with the gadget where it was, I gave up and moved the gadget above the navigation bar in the control panel. The move meant that I had to start over with the padding. After a lot of trial and error, I finally got the placement right...sort of. It looks the way it is supposed to, more or less, in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. In Opera, however, the words on the navigation bar dip down onto the first yellow line. It's not what I wanted, but if I change it, the view in the other browsers will be messed up.
So for all of you who wondering what on earth was going on, I'm sorry. Hopefully, I won't be messing around with the design again any time soon.
Wait. Isn't that what I said last time?
