An Old Woman Goes to the Movies

On a lighter note, my 78-year-old, legally blind grandmother took my nephew to the theater yesterday to see Hotel for Dogs. My grandmother hasn't been to the movies since my mom took her to see Steel Magnolias back in 1989, which was 20 years ago. A lot has changed since then, including the ticket price, so I would have paid good money to have been a fly on that theater wall. Chandler said that he had to show her what to do and where to go the entire time. I would say, "Poor kid," but knowing Chandler he probably used my grandmother's clueless nature as an opportunity to con her out of every last dime in her purse. He probably talked her into popcorn, Coke, and four packs of candy, and knowing my grandmother, she probably gave it to him. After all, you're talking about a kid who can turn on the crocodile tears at will. How do you think he got her to buy him a new bike?

What's even funnier is that the day before he made her play the Wii, and she actually beat him at The Clone Wars. Chandler claims that he let her beat him, but I don't know how true that statement is. I don't think he would admit it if she beat him honestly. However, you would hear him crying for miles--he cried for a good half hour when my mother beat him at checkers--so maybe he's telling the truth after all. Either way, I would have paid good money to see my grandmother pretending to yield a lifesaber with a nunchuck and remote control. My mom said my grandmother can't move her arms today still from the game. That I can believe. I'm 32, and I had several days of soreness after playing it.

I wonder what my nephew has next up his sleeve--getting my grandmother to rollerblade or to ride a bike? If either of those scenarios ever happen, I'll drive south five hours just so I can videotape the event and put it on YouTube.
