Make Yourself Amazing This Year at the UK's MYA Clinics

When I was growing up, I got teased a lot. For starters, I seemed to be the only curly-haired child in a sea of shiny, straight-haired children. Back then, Frizz Ease had not been invented yet, and very few if any shampoo companies catered to Curly Sues so, as you can imagine, my hair was often as frizzy as it was curly. I also got teased for having a big forehead, a big nose, a weak chin, little lips, and anything else my fellow classmates found laugh-worthy. Needless to say, I grew up with a complex about my looks. Instead of seeing my imperfections as things that made me unique, I just saw them as things that made me ugly.

Right after law school, the credit limit on one of my credit cards was increased enough that I could finally get a nose and chin job. I was so excited going into the procedure. I wasn't so delusional that I thought that a smaller nose and a more prominent chin could change my life; I just thought that they would finally give me the confidence to do it myself. In other words, I thought that I might finally stop feeling like an ugly wallflower (or a homely one, as one of my oh-so-lovely Kappa Delta sisters used to call me), get my big nose out of a book, go out into the world, and have fun.

Yeah, well, those things didn't happen. Even though my plastic surgeon had been board certified for close to 30 years and no one had anything bad to say about him pre-surgery, he turned out to be a total quack. My chin implant is off-center, and my nose is a lopsided mess. Theoretically, I could have sued him for malpractice, but in reality it would have cost me more to sue him than it would to have just gone to another town and another surgeon and had the botched body parts fixed. I didn't have the money to do either so Dr. Incompetent basically got away with making me look like a bigger freak than I already did. Afterwards, I found out from all those people that thought he was so great prior to surgery that I wasn't the first face or other body part that he had botched.

If it is one thing that I learned from that experience, it's this: before you go under the knife, make sure that your surgeon is both experienced and competent, like Dr. John Ryan of the MYA or the Make Yourself Amazing Clinics in London, Leeds, Manchester, and Newcastle in the United Kingdom. Dr. Ryan has over 25 years experience as a plastic surgeon and has performed over 100,000 cosmetic procedures. Dr. Ryan operates with a team of equally-skilled and experienced surgeons, including a group of plastic surgeons that specialize in breast enhancement surgery. Breast enhancement surgery isn't just for the flat-chested. While it's true that larger breasts may very well restore the self-esteem of a woman who has been called a "carpenter's dream" her whole life, some woman actually benefit from smaller breasts.

Take my mom, for instance. I come from a long line of well-endowed women. Although I have never had a problem with my own cup size, my mother, who is at least a DD, has. She constantly has back pain from her breasts, and it's hard for her to find a bra that doesn't cut into her shoulders. She is convinced that, if she could just get them surgically reduced, she would not only have less back pain, but with less weight on her chest, her asthma would improve. Breast enhancement specialists, like those at MYA, could not only confirm her suspicions but give her the added benefit of knowing that they know what they're talking about since they do that type of procedure every day and not just once in a blue moon.

Unfortunately, plastic surgery isn't in my mom's budget right now. If she lived in the UK, she could check out one of MYA's great financing deals. The staff at the MYA Clinics can help you arrange one of several different types of loans for your cosmetic procedure, from interest-free 10-month loans to interest-included loans that stretch over several years. They even helped one of their patients, a student, get a loan that required her to pay only 20 pounds a month. I'm not sure what 20 pounds equals in U.S. dollars, but I'm sure it's something that even my mother could afford.

Consultations at the MYA Clinic are free. First, you meet with a patient coordinator, who can answer your general questions about the selected surgery or procedure. Next, you get to meet one of the MYA surgeons, who can then discuss the surgery or procedure in greater detail. You can even arrange a pre-op consultation with an RN to make sure that you are healthy enough for surgery. After surgery, you may be required to stay overnight at the clinic, and several follow up consultations will be scheduled to ensure that you are healing properly and that the surgery or procedure was a success. MYA also offers 24-hour assistance via its hotline, which is great if you're like me and think of your most poignant questions in the middle of the night.

If you live in the United Kingdom and are considering undergoing a cosmetic surgery or procedure, MYA and its website, www.mya.co.uk, are a great place to begin your research into which surgeon is right for you. Take it from someone who has been there and done that; researching your surgeon is key.
