I know better than to buy my dogs' food from the grocery store. Even before the dog food recalls, I knew what was in those type of foods--byproducts, glutens, food coloring, preservatives that have been linked to cancer--and what wasn't--real nutrition. I had no choice but to educate myself because Bella seems to have one health problem after another. However, recently I switched to Pedigree Complete Senior in order to save money. Holistic dog food costs more upfront, even if it ends up being cheaper in the long run because the dogs eat less of it. On my current budget, it was the upfront cost that was getting me, not the long run cost.Well, I no longer care about saving money, at least so far as my dogs are concerned. Why? For starters, Bailey threw up what little of the Pedigree that he's eaten yesterday afternoon, and Bella woke up this morning with bloody diarrhea. I don't know if their ailments are related to the food or not, but I'm not taking any chances. I threw the bag away. I know that Pedigree recently had a recall of the Small Bites and Large Dog version of the same food, but supposedly the Senior line was excluded from the recall. I say supposedly because when the massive dog food recall happened a few years ago, supposedly certain brands and certain lines were excluded, only to be included a week or two later.
Even it's not the food, I'm not buying any more of it. I've learned my lesson. From now on, so long as we live in this town, my dogs are eating Blue Buffalo, and Blue Buffalo only. I don't care if it means that I will have to live on peanut butter and jelly just to be able to afford it. My stomach can handle poor nutrition; theirs cannot. Once we move back home, they're going back on Canidae. No more Pedigree. No more Purina One. No more Iams and Kibbles-n-Bits. It's holistic food or nothing at all.
