I'm having a bad case of allergy eyes today. I woke up to a left eye that was oozing, burning, and itching all at the same time. Consequently, I won't be wearing my contacts today. I'll have to settle for wearing my glasses, assuming that I want to see five feet in front of me. I'm not too happy about that fact.My problem with wearing glasses isn't a vanity one. I stopped worrying about whether glasses made my nose look bigger a long time ago. Instead, my discontent lies with this particular pair. The lenses are badly scratched, and the finish on the wire frame is starting to peel off. In other words, they're the Redneck Mobile of the eyeglasses world.
I would love to have new glasses. Back in the days when I had a job and a reasonable cash flow, I stopped myself from getting a new pair because I feared that my prescription had changed for the worse. As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently found out that my prescription has changed, but for the better, not for the worse. Either way, the prescription in my current glasses, like the view through the multitude of scratches, doesn't quite cut it. Nevertheless, it's not the prescription holding me back now. It's my nearly non-existent cash flow. I can't afford to spend $200 on glasses, not when I have an electricity bill to pay.
I keep telling myself that I need to order a new pair online from Zenni Optical. Zenni Optical, famous for its $8 frames, was recently recommended by Clark Howard on the nationally-syndicated talk show, The Clark Howard Show. Clark Howard is Atlanta's own "consumer advisor" and a regular on the WSB-TV news. He is constantly trying to find Atlantans the best deals in the area and online and offers other great advice about how to save money in these hard economic times. I figure if Zenni Optical glasses are good enough for Clark Howard, they're good enough for me.
Zenni Optical has gotten in several new styles of eyeglasses since the last time that I checked out its web site. I think that I want to get something a little more funky this time. My current glasses are what I would call a safe choice in style--thin, wire-framed, Laura Ashley glasses. I chose them because they were on the other end of the spectrum from the glasses that I wore from the sixth grade through my first or second year of college. If I did the math right, sixth grade began in the fall of 1987, so that ought to give you some clue as to what those glasses looked like. They were big, oversized, tortoiseshells that took up half of my face. I swear Demi Moore had a pair just like them in some old movie; just don't ask me which one.
Right now I'm leaning toward the above-pictured pair from Zenni Optical's $12.95 line. Call me cheesy, but I like the little sparkles on the corners of the frames. I already have some sunglasses that are quite similar. A girl has got to have her bling, right? At Zenni Optical's low prices, I could actually afford to buy several pairs of blingy goodness. Zenni Optical's glasses range in price from $8 to $39.95 per pair. The company also offers several upgrades that used to be only found at walk-in stores. For instance, you can add sunglass tint and an anti-reflective coating to your lenses for just $4.95 a piece or choose to substitute photochromic lenses--those cool lenses that darken in sunlight--for just $39.00. Shipping and handling are also very affordable--only $4.95 per shipment, no matter how many glasses you buy.
Each pair of eyeglasses comes with 1.57 index lenses, but you can upgrade those to thinner lenses if you like. The glasses further come with an anti-scratch coating; UV protection; polished, beveled edges; a hard eyeglass case; and a microfiber cleansing cloth. Zenni Optical guarantees that your glasses will have the correct prescription and optimum clarity. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with your purchase, you can return it within four weeks for a 50 percent refund. If you're like me and need new glasses but can't afford department store prices, you should give Zenni Optical a try.
I'm going to give my mom a call and advise her to check out the site as well. She spends half of her life trying to find where she left her glasses. I keep telling her that she needs to buy one of those old lady chains so she can wear her glasses around her neck, but she refuses. At Zenni Optical's prices, my mother can now afford to buy a pair of glasses for home, for work, and for her car and get a tinted pair for the beach and pool as well. Then maybe she can finally throw away those hideous clip-ons that she has been using as sunglasses.
